“July is Sarcoma Awareness Month.
Because sarcoma is so rare, a diagnosis often brings profound isolation.
Meeting Andrea Ruano earlier this year, an osteosarcoma survivor, reminded me of the ‘long tail’ of this journey, the lifelong side effects, the endless waiting, and the vital need for human connection. As Andrea beautifully shared, we aren’t just ‘fighting a battle’ against cancer; we are collectively on a quest for health, dignity, and hope.
Finding a community and specialized care that understands this reality shouldn’t be left to chance.
That’s why I support the Sarcoma Patient Advocacy Global Network (SPAGN) and their campaign: ‘You are not alone.’
This week focuses on a critical hurdle: Access to Expertise, Care and Research.
With rare cancers, research is often underfunded and locating multidisciplinary care can be overwhelming. Through initiatives like the Sarcoma Intelligent Specialist Network (SISN), SPAGN is building essential bridges to close these access gaps.
Grounding our work in the lived experiences of advocates like Andrea ensures no one faces this journey alone.
