Nicola Fusco Highlights the Role of Multidisciplinary Collaboration in Advancing Precision Oncology

Nicola Fusco, Full Professor of Pathology, Department of Oncology and Hemato-Oncology at University of Milan, Director, Division of Pathology and Somatic Molecular Diagnostics at IEO, shared on LinkedIn:

“Precision oncology increasingly depends on what happens between disciplines.

At the From Testing to Targeted Treatments (FT3) meeting just before ESMO 2026 in Madrid, where I represented the European Society of Pathology (ESP), one point emerged particularly clearly: biomarker-driven medicine requires pathology+oncology and translational research to evolve together.

The challenge is to understand how biomarkersshould be tested and ultimately integrated into clinical decision-making, everywhere in the World.

This is where multidisciplinary networks such as FT3 can make a difference: connecting complementary expertise and turning scientific innovation into approaches that are robust enough for clinical practice.

The final session was a particularly good example of this convergence, highlighting how increasingly difficult it is to separate advances in precision oncology from advances in pathology and biomarker science.

It was also great to see Dr. Marianna D’Ercole, molecular pathologist from our team at the IEO, contributing to the program and bringing our work into this discussion.

Progress in precision medicine rarely comes from a single discipline or institution.

Let’s get connected.”

Behind every biomarker: a multidisciplinary team

What it takes to deliver a valid and reliable result

Institution

  • Hospital management investing in pathology
  • Up-to-date instruments and CE-IVD kits
  • Internal and external quality control programs

Laboratory

  • Trained pathologists
  • Trained laboratory technicians
  • Trained molecular biologists

Sampling

  • Nurses trained in blood collection for liquid biopsy (ctDNA)
  • Radiologists, endoscopists and interventional pulmonologists: small but adequate samples

One team – one reliable biomarker result
