Nicholas Hornstein: What Oncology Looks Like When Science and Judgment Meet

Nicholas Hornstein, Assistant Professor at Northwell Health, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“We’re not going to be able to save everyone. But if we never try, we never will.

That’s something I said in a recent USA Today article featuring one of my patients, Phillip, and it’s a mindset I carry into clinic every day.

Phillip was diagnosed with metastatic colorectal cancer, with disease in the liver and lungs. His story is not just about a specific drug or procedure, but about persistence, partnership, and being willing to pursue the right strategy when the stakes are high.

The article highlights how we used a combination of systemic therapy and liver-directed treatment, including hepatic artery infusion, to focus treatment where the disease burden was greatest. It worked because it was the right approach for the right patient at the right time.

This is what oncology looks like when science and judgment meet. Thoughtful risk, careful patient selection, and patients who are willing to engage deeply in their care.

Phillip is a special person, and I’m grateful he trusted me with his care. I’m also grateful to practice medicine in an era where we have more to offer patients every year.

This is why we keep pushing the science forward.”
