Nicholas DeVito, Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Division of Medical Oncology at Duke University, shared a post on LinkedIn by Susan Woods, adding:
“I recommend a low red meat, high fiber diet that emphasizes plant-based protein to my patients with gastrointestinal cancers and those inquiring about cancer prevention. Reducing ultraprocessed and high sugar foods is also important, and while it is nice to see this health risk recognized, we can’t backtrack on other recommendations.”
Quoting Susan Woods’ post:
“As cheers rise for US 2025-30 Dietary Guidelines advising whole foods and avoiding processed foods, I have to throw this MAHA baby out with the bathwater.
For me, it’s Make America have Heart Attacks and No Fiber Again!
Many have expertly articulated their concerns, including
- Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics statement
- Professor, author, nutrition guru Marion Nestle
- Food and health expert Dina Aronson, MS, RDN
Critically important, the guidelines:
- Push meat, dairy, and saturated fat (you’re welcome, industry)
- Promulgate protein obsession over fiber and plant-based sources
- Don’t make sense and ignore science
Nestle says US advice is Retro: ‘Except for the excellent advice to reduce intake of highly processed foods, which were not particularly prevalent back then, these guidelines take us back to the diets of the 1950s, when everyone was eating lots of meat and dairy and not worrying much about vegetables, and heart disease was rampant. I’m all for eating whole foods but these guidelines dismiss 75 years of research favoring diets higher in plant foods.’
While DGA gets an A+ on lowering sugar / UPFs, my biggest concerns are:
- People won’t focus on sugar and junk, they’ll just see – Must.Eat.Meat.
- Where’s Waldo on Beans and Legumes? Just Say No to Less Cancer
- They want to sow chaos in our ranks: those caring most about food and health who will be distracted by whole | protein | carbs rather than science and impact
- We’re moving away from the world, i.e., EAT Lancet Commission and Planetary Health Diet
- No accountability of food and agriculture to planetary health and gas emissions
- Were they drinking when they got the advice on alcohol?!
- Who can afford all this meat and dairy, anyway?
Industry influence and realfood.gov visuals are gobsmacking me: meat + diary overpower plants, lowly grains on the bottom (what’s in that pan, meatloaf?)
The pic is the pyramid’s left side, the place where everyone’s eyes go first.”
