Neil Ranasinghe: Reflections from London Global Cancer Week 2025

London Global Cancer Week (LGCW) is done for this year and what a week it was.Organisations from all over the world showed and discussed what they are doing regarding cancer control.  I am on the LGCW Steering committee and my main role is to help ensure paediatric oncology is represented, which it certainly was.

Some of my highlights

I was also involved in a number of the actual sessions held by organisations I support:

Global Mapping of Paediatric Oncology Services “Highlighting Progress
in Different Continental Regions”

I was the moderator and helped organise the International Society of Paediatric Oncology (SIOP) Global Mapping Programme session. This programme is close to my heart, and is enabling  collaboration and research, and helping advocacy.

We are mapping every country in the world that treats children with cancer. We have made the progression from data collection to action. You can watch a recording of the session here: Global Mapping of Paediatric Oncology Services – LGCW –
YouTube. Look out for an update on the programme from me and fellow volunteer and Global Mapping Chair Maite Gorostegui.

Paediatric Oncology Rehabilitation – Global realities in an evolving
healthcare landscape

I was one of the moderators for SIOPs third session at LGCW. This was the SIOP Supportive Care network. We heard what is going on in high-, middle-, & low-income settings, as well as an active conflict zone & a resource-limited setting. Seeing the resourcefulness of the healthcare professionals in Malawi was amazing, and the moving account of what is going on in Gaza right now. You can watch a recording of the session here: Paediatric Oncology Rehabilitation – Global realities in an evolving healthcare landscape – LGCW

Patient Engagement in LMIC – Challenges and Solutions

PatientEngage are doing a lot of great patient advocacy with a focus in India, and also involved in training patient advocates. I was one of the moderators of this session and we heard inspiring stories from Ghana, The Philippines and India. For more information: PatientsEngage | Your Guide to Better Health Choices

How and why the tobacco industry influences science and targets health
professionals

I am so glad that Tobacco Control Research Group (part of Bath University) hosted a session. I know this is a particularly busy time of year for them. The more I hear about what big tobacco did in the past, and is still doing now to get more people to smoke, the more I am shocked. This group are doing great work highlighting what big tobacco are actually doing. For more information: Tobacco Control Research Group

Recordings of a lot of the sessions will be available on the LGCW site in the next few weeks. https://www.lgcw.org.uk/lgcw-2025/

I would like to thank …

A big thank you to everyone that hosted a session. A big thank you to everyone that attended a session. A big thank you to LGCW for orchestrating another week of thought provoking, inspiring and interesting sessions. A big thank you to OncoDaily for publishing another blog from me. Looking forward to next year.
