“September is Gynaecological Cancer Awareness Month (GCAM) – a vital reminder that improving outcomes requires moving beyond awareness to real, systemic action.
With more than two decades of clinical experience as a medical oncologist specialising in the treatment of women with cancer, I know that groundbreaking science can only aim to transform lives when healthcare systems are equipped to deliver it equitably. Through an ongoing collaboration between AstraZeneca and International Gynecologic Cancer Society (IGCS), I’ve had the privilege of joining a multi- stakeholder Steering Committee dedicated to tackling the root causes of uneven care.
A primary focus for our group is eliminating diagnostic delays. Gynaecological cancers are rapidly evolving in biological complexity, yet access to specialised pathology – the foundation of timely diagnosis and precision treatment – remains a critical bottleneck. Having spent years on ASCOs Clinical Practice Guideline Committee prior to joining AstraZeneca, I have seen how even the strongest clinical guidance can fall short when health systems lack the infrastructure to act on it. To overcome this, we are advocating for tangible policy reform and scalable solutions, including digital pathology tailored to local health infrastructures. By bringing together clinicians, pathologists, patient advocates, and policy leaders, we are turning shared clinical insights into concrete system – level changes.
