“Each year, NCI releases its Annual Plan and Professional Judgment Budget. For those unfamiliar, this is our unfiltered, scientifically grounded assessment of what funding, technology, and talent we will need to make the fastest possible progress against cancer.
Looking at our FY28 plan, I am struck by how far we’ve come, and how much is now within our reach. Since the 1990s, U.S. cancer death rates have declined by about one-third, translating into more than 5 million lives saved.
This year alone, we have seen remarkable milestones: proving the once ‘undruggable’ RAS gene can be targeted with daraxonrasib for pancreatic cancer and seeing cancer vaccines show promise in preventing recurrence.
Our plan is focused on the future. To define the next era of cancer research, we are outlining key strategic priorities, which include:
- harnessing AI and advanced analytics to accelerate drug discovery;
- streamlining clinical trial activation through HHS’s Project TrialBlazer, ensuring new therapies reach patients faster;
- and expanding health screening and prevention to underserved communities with high cancer mortality rates.
We cannot let our progress stall.

Ultimately, people affected by cancer are at the core of our mission.
