Nataliya Kovalchuk, Clinical Professor at Stanford Radiation Oncology, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Congratulations to the Stanford Radiation Oncology, Mevion Medical Systems, Leo Cancer Care, RaySearch Laboratories teams on this remarkable world-first milestone: treating the first patient with the Mevion S250-FIT upright proton therapy system using the Leo Cancer Care upright patient positioner.
A special thank you to the medical physics team (Yong Yang, Serdar Charyyev, Adam Johansson, Cynthia Chuang and others) and dosimetry team (Nick Nguyen, Chris Wohlers, Jonathan Lewis), who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make this achievement possible through countless hours of commissioning, QA, planning, testing, and validation. Lots of gratitude to our radiation oncology team (Susan Hiniker, Yuan James Rao, and Bill Loo) and RTT team (Jotsna Singh, Christopher Olson, and Jason Dixon, MA, RT(T)). Innovation like this is truly a team effort.
Beyond the technological achievement, upright proton therapy has the potential to make proton treatment more compact, efficient, and cost-effective, helping expand access to advanced cancer care around the world.
Proud to be part of a team pushing the boundaries of radiation oncology and improving care for patients everywhere.”
