Nataliya Kovalchuk, Clinical Professor at Stanford Radiation Oncology, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Observership Started for Team – Bukovynian Clinical Oncology Center.
Help Ukraine Group (HUG) is proud to support an observership for Team 1 – Bukovynian Clinical Oncology Center at Akademiska sjukhuset, Uppsala, Sweden, taking place May 20-29, 2026.
In addition to the observership, the team also participated in the ESTRO 2026 Congress in Stockholm, gaining valuable exposure to the latest advances in radiation oncology and strengthening international collaboration.
The participants include:
- Marta Popova – Radiation Oncologist.
- Vadym Perko – Medical Physicist.
- Mariia Bezerko – Radiation Therapist (RTT).
This observership is part of a broader initiative supporting 10 multidisciplinary Ukrainian teams (RO + MP + RTT) through two-week training visits at leading European radiation oncology centers.
The team is already fully immersed in the experience and shared how impressed they are with the advanced technologies and workflows at Akademiska sjukhuset.
We are truly enjoying both the learning experience and the opportunity to be here. MRI-linac, prostate brachytherapy, and proton therapy are just incredible. We believe Ukraine has highly skilled specialists – the challenge is equipment and resources. We are using every minute of our time here to learn as much as possible. Lots of gratitude to the Akademiska team for training us!
The observership includes training in:
- IMRT, VMAT, IGRT, CBCT, and advanced image guidance.
- Elekta linear accelerator workflows.
- Treatment planning and quality assurance.
- RTT positioning, immobilization, and IGRT workflows.
- Department organization and multidisciplinary collaboration.
- Evidence-based modern radiotherapy practice.
We are deeply grateful to the Akademiska sjukhuset team for their warm welcome, dedication, and outstanding support of Ukrainian oncology professionals during this challenging time.
Special thanks to Swecare, US Department of Energy National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), Office of Radiological Security (ORS), and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) for supporting this initiative, and to Viktor Iakovenko, Ph.D. for assistance with the selection process.
Wishing the Bukovynian team a productive and inspiring observership as they continue bringing new knowledge and modern radiotherapy practices back to Ukraine.”
