Natalia Vilcu-Bajurean: Moldova’s Journey to Equitable Childhood Cancer Treatment at UNGA80

Natalia Vilcu-Bajurean, President of the Public Association “Life Without Leukemia”, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Honored to have spoken at the United Nations General Assembly Side Event, ‘A Global Movement to Improve Survival and Reduce Suffering for Children with Cancer and Other Catastrophic Diseases’, sharing Moldova’s journey toward equitable access to childhood cancer treatment.

In 2018, when Gheorghe, my son, was diagnosed with ALL, we faced a system with limited resources and deep fear around cancer. I started a long and difficult journey as a patient advocate, trying to identify the major drawbacks for Moldova.

Under the World Health Organization Global Initiative for Childhood Cancer, Moldova’s membership within the St. Jude Global Alliance lead by St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, amplified by a good collaboration between the Ministry of Health of Moldova, the Oncology Institute, the National Cancer Control Program of Moldova and the Public Association ‘Life Without Leukemia’ we were able to assess how the gaps in providing quality medications can be overcome.

Today, Moldova is part of the Global Platform for Accessing Childhood Cancer Medicines, and this milestone is the result of fruitful collaboration proving that progress is possible when we work together.

We expect our first medicine delivery by the end of the year – and with it, renewed hope for every child facing cancer in Moldova.”
