Nancy Sobhy Bolous: Insights From an Intensive Global Research Training Experience

Nancy Sobhy Bolous, Health Economics, Health Technology Assessment, Cost-Effectiveness Analysis, Decision Sciences, Hospital Management, Healthcare Management Consulting, Healthcare Management Innovation, Public Health Project Management, Assistant Professor at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“I found a true ‘scientific wonderland’ at the International Collaboration for Research Methods Development in Oncology (CREDO) workshop, held in Lonavala, India (March 2-7, 2026).

In just one week, I watched ambitious research ideas evolve into fully developed study proposals powered by an incredible model of collaboration. Each group was intentionally designed as a mini scientific community: 5 multi-disciplinary faculty members, 7 participants, 1-2 patient advocates, and a statistician observer.

This structure created a space where ideas were constantly challenged, refined, and strengthened, not just by faculty, but by peers learning from one another. By the end of the week, what started as individual projects had become shared intellectual journeys, and strong professional bonds had formed.

What made it even more powerful was the presence of patient advocates, individuals with lived experience who grounded every discussion in what truly matters.

I had the privilege of being invited as the only health economics faculty member this year. Contributing that lens (while learning from outstanding colleagues across disciplines) was deeply rewarding. I walked away with a much richer understanding of clinical trial design (and a newfound appreciation for sample size calculations-thank you, Marc Buyse!).

I also had the chance to deliver a health economics lecture to all workshop attendees and made it engaging enough to win a bet and avoid paying $20 to every participant.

Huge appreciation to CS Pramesh and Priya Ranganathan for creating such a thoughtful, high-impact experience. Grateful to my Group B co-faculty and inspiring participants for the rich discussions and collaboration. And to my St. Jude colleagues, especially Carlos Rodriguez-Galindo for the support and nomination.”
