Muna Al-Khaifi: 10 Key Takeaways From the Inaugural Advances in Onco-Menopause Conference

Muna Al-Khaifi, Onco-Menopause specialist at Mount Sinai Hospital (Toronto), Sinai Health, shared on LinkedIn:

“Menopause. Cancer. Survivorship. Connecting the dots. Moving care forward.

When I first introduced this conference, I wrote:

‘Menopause. Cancer. Survivorship. It’s time to connect the dots.’

After a year of planning and bringing this vision to life, it was deeply rewarding to see those connections take shape at the inaugural Advances in Onco-Menopause International Conference.

The enthusiasm in our virtual room, the insightful questions, and the willingness to share experiences reinforced how much this work matters – and how many gaps we still need to address together.

Here are 10 key takeaways we are carrying forward:
  1. Coordinated, multidisciplinary, patient-centred care is essential.
  2. Clinical decisions require nuanced interpretation of evidence and attention to each survivor’s risks, symptoms, values, and preferences.
  3. Menopausal symptoms deserve early recognition, proactive assessment, and timely treatment.
  4. Evolving nonhormonal therapies are expanding options for managing vasomotor symptoms.
  5. Systemic and local hormone therapies require distinct consideration and individualized oncologic risk assessment.
  6. Exercise, nutrition, sleep, stress management, and social connection belong within comprehensive survivorship care.
  7. Sexual, cognitive, and psychological health deserve routine attention and appropriate support.
  8. Bone health requires proactive assessment, monitoring, and fracture prevention.
  9. Reproductive and metabolic health require early conversations and long-term planning.
  10. Survivors need clear, balanced information that translates evidence into practical guidance and addresses misinformation.

Thank you to our exceptional speakers, patient advocates, and attendees for your expertise, openness, and engagement.

Connecting the dots must continue beyond this meeting – through education, research, collaboration, and the care we provide every day.

The conversations don’t end here. The work of advancing evidence-based care continues.”
