Mukhtasar Malcolm Alkali: A Child Should Not Lose an Eye, or a Life, Because Nobody Looked Twice

Mukhtasar Malcolm Alkali, Project Manager, Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) Officer, Assistant Coordinator for the SPARC Project and the One-Call-Away initiative at the Medical Cancer Foundation, shared a post on X:

“Medicaid Cancer Foundation (MCF) has supported Musa Yakubu, diagnosed with Retinoblastoma, with ₦500,000 towards his treatment.

The support is part of MCF’s activities for September, the Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. In Nigeria, too many childhood cancers are still missed or wrongly diagnosed. A white spot in the eye, persistent fever, unexplained swelling, bone pain or weight loss is too often treated as malaria, an infection, or ‘something that will pass.’

By the time the right diagnosis comes, the disease has already advanced. September is a reminder, but the work cannot end with the month. Parents need to know the warning signs. Health workers need to suspect cancer early. Families need help to reach treatment before cost and delay decide the outcome.

Every child deserves the chance to grow, dream and live. Awareness, early detection and direct support — like this ₦500,000 for Musa — are how that chance becomes real. If you can give, refer, or simply share the signs, do it. A child should not lose an eye, or a life, because nobody looked twice.

Get well soon Musa Yakubu.”
