Maria Sklodowska-Curie National Research Institute of Oncology (MSCNRIO) shared a post on LinkedIn:
”The last day of the OECI Oncology Days 2026, which has been running since June 17 in Warsaw, is another moment of particular importance not only for the National Institute of Oncology and the Polish oncology community.
During the OECI General Assembly, Prof. Iwona Lugowska, clinical oncologist, Director’s Plenipotentiary for International Cooperation and Head of the NIO Center of Excellence for Precision Medicine, took over the position of President of the Organisation of European Cancer Institutes (OECI).
This is a unique moment – for the second time, a person associated with the National Institute of Oncology is at the head of OECI. In the 1990s, this function was performed by Prof. Andrzej Kułakowski, a prominent Polish oncologist, the founder of Polish oncological surgery and a long-time director of the National Institute of Oncology and National Research Institute.
Taking over the presidency by Prof. Iwona Ługowska means the direct participation of the representative of the Polish center in setting strategic directions for the development of European cooperation in the field of treatment quality, research, innovation, accreditation and development of oncology networks.
As Prof. Iwona Ługowska emphasizes, chairing the OECI is an honour, but also a commitment to strengthen cooperation between cancer centres in Europe and beyond and to develop solutions that really support patients and healthcare systems.
We invite you to read the article in which we introduce the profile of Prof. Ługowska and write about the details of the selection of the Professor for this important position:
We congratulate you and wish you good luck in the implementation of this important mission.”
