“The first installment of today’s MRF Research Wednesday campaign spotlights Dr. Nosakhare Paul Ilerhunmwuwa of UPMC Hillman Cancer Center and UPMC Heme-Onc Fellowship Program as a recipient of a 2026 Resident/Fellow Award with funding provided by Kevin Sterling and Michele Hakimian, MD.
Dr. Ilerhunmwuwa’s research project titled, ‘OPRM1 and CD8+ T-CELL Spatial Distribution in Advanced Cutaneous Melanoma,’ aims to improve understanding of immunotherapy resistance and support the future development of treatment strategies that help the immune system more effectively target melanoma, particularly for patients with limited remaining options.
Reflecting on the impact of his work for patients, Dr. Ilerhunmwuwa shares, ‘Some people with advanced skin melanoma do not respond well to immunotherapy, a treatment that helps the body’s immune system find and fight cancer. My research looks at whether opioid medicines, as well as opioids naturally made by our bodies, may affect how immune cells fight melanoma. By understanding this better, we hope to learn why immunotherapy works for some patients and not others and, in the future, find better ways to treat melanoma.’
