Moawia Mohammed Ali Elhassan, Associate Professor at the University of Gezira and Consultant in Clinical and Radiation Oncology at Universal Hospital, Sudan, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Radiotherapy in Sudan: facing infrastructure, workforce and armed conflict challenges.
Our latest research, published in Radiotherapy and Oncology Journal, maps the history of Sudan’s radiotherapy infrastructure – from 27 historical installations since 1967 down to a devastating post-conflict reality: today, only one medical facility remains operational for the entire country.
The paper identifies severe infrastructure gaps, workforce shortages, and the critical lack of public access to advanced technologies like IMRT/VMAT.
This paper is more than an assessment; it is a roadmap for recovery. We outline actionable strategies for rebuilding Sudan’s oncological infrastructure, focusing on equipment sustainability, workforce training, and equitable healthcare distribution.”
