Miriam Mutebi։ Cancer as a Relationship Stress Test

Miriam Mutebi, Consultant Breast Surgical Oncologist, Immediate Past President of AORTIC- Africa, and UICC Board Member, shared on LinkedIn:

“Nobody tells you that cancer is a relationship stress test.

Imagine sitting across from a couple in your consultation room. He is asking practical questions about scheduling and childcare.

From a clinical standpoint, they look like a couple prepared to navigate treatment together. The strain doesn’t arrive as confrontation, but sneaks in as withdrawal.

Four months into chemotherapy, he packs a suitcase and doesn’t look back. He married a healthy woman, he says. This was not the life he expected.

Chronicillness has an unexpected way of exposing the fragility of both life and relationships.

Or imagine another couple; their marriage doesn’t fracture during diagnosis. It falters during survivorship, when endocrine therapy introduces side effects neither of them were warned about.

Physical intimacy becomes painful. He assumes rejection, while she internalizes guilt. The marriage does not recover.

These are not rare stories.

And yet the conversations that might prevent them, about fatigue, sexual changes, financial strain, the emotional weight of prolonged treatment, are rarely had proactively.

Cancer doesn’t stay politely contained inside a diagnosis. It moves through relationships, routines, and finances. Building a support system intentionally, before crisis forces it, is part of treatment.

Know anyone who needs survivor care? DM me, and I will point them in the right direction.

PS: I talk about this in StuffIdTellMySister. It helps patients and caregivers navigate this relationship stress test.”
