Miriam Mutebi: Leadership is About Creating Space for Others

Miriam Mutebi, Consultant Breast Surgical Oncologist at Aga Khan, UICC Board Member, and Chair of the Commonwealth International Taskforce for the Elimination of Cervical Cancer, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Leadership is not only about what we build. It is also about the space we create gor others.

Last week, I had the privilege of attending the launch of the third edition of Shadow In Perpetuity by Prof. Nicholas Anthony Othieno-Abinya, one of the pioneers of oncology in Kenya.

The book offers a unique perspective on the evolution of cancer care in Kenya and Africa, the pain points faced, the humanity of medicine and the opportunities to improve care, through the eyes of someone who has helped shape that journey over decades.

What struck me most, however, was not only the launch itself.

While celebrating his own work, Prof. Othieno-Abinya graciously created space for me to share and sell copies of Stuff Id Tell My Sister during the event.

That gesture speaks to a quality that is too often overlooked in leadership: the willingness to support others while continuing to contribute one’s own voice and experience.

In a field that depends on mentorship, collaboration, and institutional memory, such generosity matters.

Congratulations, Prof. Othieno-Abinya, on this important milestone and on your enduring contribution to cancer care, education, and oncology leadership in Kenya and beyond.

Shadow in Perpetuity provides valuable insights into the cancer landscape in Kenya and Africa and is well worth reading for anyone interested in the history, challenges, and progress of cancer care on the continent.

Link to the book in the comments.”
