Miriam Mutebi: Thoughts From IARC 60 Conference at Lyon

Miriam Mutebi, Consultant Breast Surgical Oncologist at Aga Khan, UICC Board Member, and Chair of the Commonwealth International Taskforce for the Elimination of Cervical Cancer, shared a post on LinkedIn:

Cancer doesn’t rest. And apparently, neither do we.

Geneva wrapped up, and it was straight on to the next leg: Lyon, for the IARC at 60 conference.

The train ride across the French countryside gave us a rare moment to breathe. Sometimes the best conversations in global oncology happen in exactly those quiet in-between moments.

My colleague and friend Meritxell Mallafré-Larrosa and I spent the journey thinking out loud; brainstorming, connecting dots, asking the questions that often get lost in busy conference rooms.

But beyond the conference itself, this trip carries real strategic meaning for me.

We have been working over the last 2 years to develop a formal partnership between IARC and AORTIC- Africa, one focused on strengthening research and training in African oncology.

This essential collaboration builds on an MOU developed last year and reflects a shared commitment to advancing cancer research capacity and improving outcomes across the continent.

What excites me now is starting to watch the detailed work plan take shape, and seeing what becomes possible when two organizations align around a shared commitment to improving cancer care in Africa.

There is still so much to do. But moments like this week remind me that the right people are at the table, and the work is moving forward.

More from Lyon soon.
