Miriam Mutebi: One Day Until the Launch of the Book

Miriam Mutebi, Breast Surgical Oncologist and Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery at the Aga Khan University Hospital shared a post on LinkedIn:

1 Day to go until launch

Someone asked me:

“Who exactly is this book for?”

Fair question.

  1. This book is for the woman sitting in her bathroom at 2 AM, fingers trembling as she feels a lump she’s been ignoring for three months. You’re terrified. You’re Googling symptoms. You’re convincing yourself it’s probably nothing while simultaneously planning your funeral. This book won’t make the fear disappear. But it will tell you what to do next, in plain language, without the medical jargon that makes everything scarier.
  2. This book is also for the mother who just got diagnosed and has no idea how to tell her children. You’re trying to stay strong while falling apart inside. You’re wondering how to explain chemotherapy to a 7-year-old. You’re terrified of becoming a burden to your family. This book holds space for all of that. And it shows you how other women navigated the same impossible conversations.
  3. This book is for the young lady told she’s “too young for breast cancer” by three different doctors. Despite the lump. Despite your family history. Despite your gut telling you something is wrong. This book validates what you already know: age doesn’t determine cancer risk. And it gives you language to advocate for yourself when medical providers dismiss your concerns.
  4. This book is for the health care provider who wants to deliver better care but struggles with cultural competency. You know the medicine. But you don’t always know how to navigate the cultural beliefs, economic constraints, and family dynamics that affect treatment decisions. This book bridges that gap.
  5. This book is for the daughter, sister, brother, father, husband, friend, caregiver, watching someone you love fight cancer and feeling helpless. You want to help, but you don’t know how. You’re saying the wrong things and making it worse without meaning to.

This book shows you how to support without suffocating, how to advocate without taking over, how to love someone through the hardest chapter of their life.

Basically, if you:

  • Have breasts
  • Love someone with breasts
  • Work in healthcare
  • Want systems to work better for women
  • Believe women’s lives matter (and generally the life of anyone with cancer)

…This book is for you.

1 day to launch. Pre-order link in the comments. (The book will also be on Amazon soon)
