Miriam Mutebi: What No One Tells You About Breast Surgery

Miriam Mutebi, Breast Surgical Oncologist and Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery at the Aga Khan University Hospital, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“What No One Tells You About Breast Surgery (But Every Patient Asks).

Behind every breast surgery story is more than scars or preventing complications.

More often, it’s about the questions patients whisper before and after, like:

Will it hurt?

We often half-joke that pain in the hospital is unacceptable. Pain control is a top priority, so you can get up and moving quickly.

How long before I’m back to normal?

Most women can walk on the same day, return home by the next day, or within a week (for more complex procedures), and heal steadily. The skin typically takes about a week, while deeper tissues take 3-4 weeks.

What if something goes wrong?

Complications are rare (less than 5%), but if they happen to you, it’s 100%.

We usually discuss before surgery what these could be, how we identify them early, and manage them appropriately. That’s why early follow-up and honest conversations with your surgeon are crucial.

Can I eat after surgery?

YES! You’ll be surprised how often this is the first question!

The truth? Breast surgery is often more straightforward than patients expect.
And recovery isn’t just about healing; it’s about dignity, confidence, and returning to life.

If you’re preparing for breast surgery or supporting someone who is, know this:

Your questions are valid, your fears are normal, and your care team is here to walk you through every step.”
