Miriam Mutebi: Why Health Systems Research is Important

Miriam Mutebi, Breast Surgical Oncologist and Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery at the Aga Khan University Hospital, shared on LinkedIn:

“Why Health Systems Research is Important

New treatments can save lives. But without strong hashtag#healthsystems, many may never reach the people who need them. Health systems research helps close that gap.

It’s the difference between having a breakthrough cancer treatment and getting it to a patient in a rural clinic 400 miles from the nearest city.

Health systems research asks the questions that make care actually work:

  • How can we build systems that deliver quality, cost-effective care
  • How can we train and retain enough specialists in underserved areas?
  • What supply chain models ensure medicines arrive on time?
  • Which community-led interventions could prevent late diagnoses?

In Africa, where health systems face unique challenges, this research isn’t a luxury; it’s a lifeline.

When we study how systems succeed (and fail), we can design solutions that truly fit our realities.

That means creating hashtag#policies rooted in local evidence, building training programs that work for our workforce, and forging partnerships that last.

At the end of the day, a health system is only as strong as the lives it can save. And research is how we make that strength real.”
