Mikkael Sekeres, M.D., M.S., chief of the Division of Hematology and professor of medicine at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, part of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, has been elected to the Executive Committee of the American Society of Hematology (ASH), the world’s largest professional organization dedicated to conquering blood diseases.

Dr. Sekeres will serve a four-year term as councillor beginning after the 2025 ASH Annual Meeting, Dec. 6–9 in Orlando, Florida.

‘It’s an incredible honor to serve alongside colleagues who are shaping the future of hematology,’ Dr. Sekeres said. ‘ASH has long stood at the forefront of scientific rigor, clinical excellence, and advocacy for patients with blood disorders. I look forward to helping strengthen that mission in the years ahead, and serve the needs of ASH and hematologists worldwide.’

At Sylvester, Dr. Sekeres leads an internationally recognized program focused on myelodysplastic syndromes and acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in older adults. He has been an ASH member since 2002 and currently chairs the Society’s Older Adults with AML Treatment Guidelines Panel. He previously chaired the Committee on Communications and served as founding editor-in-chief of ASH Clinical News, which became one of the field’s most widely read publications.

Also elected to the Executive Committee were Alison Loren, M.D., M.S.C.E., chief of the Division of Hematology/Oncology at the University of Pennsylvania, who will serve as vice president, and Adam Cuker, M.D., M.S., professor of medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, who will serve as councillor.

‘Drs. Loren, Cuker, and Sekeres will help shape the future of hematology at a time when the basic underpinnings of science and medicine are under threat. They are leaders in their respective fields and will bring their unique perspectives and insights to ASH,’ said 2025 ASH President, Belinda Avalos, M.D. ‘With their dedication, ASH will continue to fight for the future of hematology and drive meaningful change for patients with blood disorders worldwide.'”
