“Me and sleep don’t get on really. We’re not best mates, that’s for certain.
Which is why I found myself downstairs about 4am this morning with a mug of decaf tea and an overactive brain that was chewing stuff.
Which in turn is how I got chatting to someone in New Zealand, rather alarmed that it was sensible time of day there – and bearing in mind the time difference with the UK – but was clearly a hideous time here the UK. However…I had an interesting cancer conversation with Michael.
We got talking over LinkedIn about my recent post on the Knowledge to Action gap:
‘Why isn’t the cancer system built for life after treatment‘, generously reposted by OncoDaily.
His comment on my post included: ‘Outside voices are safer to express than those attached to the current system.’
Less career jeopardy certainly, because more than one person has said that to me by message, not by a post-comment. Too risky.
He works in cancer recovery. Rebuilding strength and capacity after treatment ends. He knows the gap from the inside.
And he’s right. I can say things that people with careers inside the system can’t always say out loud. Not because I’m braver. Just because I’ve got less to lose.
That’s not a comfortable thought actually. In fact it’s infuriating if you think about it long enough at 4am. It probably shouldn’t work that way. No…it definitely shouldn’t work that way. It’s outrageous.
But then – not everyone has the capacity to advocate for themselves either. Which means the people who most need this conversation heard are often the least able to have it.
