Miguel Quintela-Fandino: A New Chapter for Breast Cancer Research at CNIO

Miguel Quintela-Fandino, Director of Clinical Research Program at Spanish National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO), shared a post on LinkedIn:

“The good news continues for the Breast Cancer Clinical Research Unit of CNIO – Spanish National Cancer Research Centre! We already have the final resolution of the Health Research Projects for the Instituto de Salud Carlos III 2025 – again, we are very proud to have managed to renew for 3 years (this will be 18, consecutive since the now distant 2010 when we achieved the first) our line of work in precision oncology. This time, with our proposal focused on studying the “mechanical memory” of tumour cells conditioned by their stay in a highly fibrous stroma, we have achieved the highest funding we have ever obtained in this call (more than 300000 euros).

The main objectives are 3:

  1.  to study how a gene expression signature based on mechanical conditioning determines the prognosis in early HER2-negative breast cancer, compared to other current genomic platforms;
  2.  to assess the activity of antifibrogenic compounds in aggressive breast cancer models, since, unlike other genomic signatures, mechanical conditioning points directly to an actionable tumor target: tumor fibrosis;
  3.  dissecting the previous effects at the level of the different tumor sub-compartments
    Exciting times ahead! We are extremely grateful to both the ISCIII and the panel of evaluators for recognizing the quality and potential of our proposal, and we are already eager to get down to work since January 1st.”
