Mieke Van Hemelrijck, Professor in Cancer Epidemiology at King’s College London, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“A very inspiring start to the day at the House of Lords, joining a breakfast roundtable focused on facilitating the use of urinary biomarkers in the bladder cancer pathway. Grateful to Lord Ian Austin, The British Association of Urological Surgeons, and Nonacus for bringing together such a committed group, and to see colleagues from Fight Bladder Cancer and The Urology Foundation in the room.
What made this especially meaningful was seeing how long-standing collaborations are beginning to align. It was great to reconnect with Gareth Collett CBE CEng PhD Hon FIExpE, who leads the BAUS Patient Office and whose work continues to be closely linked with our shared efforts on understanding bladder cancer risk in veterans.
Equally, working alongside Melanie Costin and the team at Fight Bladder Cancer over the years has shown the real value of sustained partnership between researchers, clinicians, and patient advocates.
The discussions also resonated strongly with several ongoing efforts across the community – from the near completion of our Cancer Research UK (CRUK) – funded BC-RECON project with Rik Bryan, to Anna Haire’s PhD work exploring how urinary biomarkers can best be implemented in routine care through engagement with both patients and healthcare professionals.
This morning felt like one of those moments where different strands – research, patient voice, clinical practice, and policy – come together. Encouraging to see growing political interest in supporting progress in this space, and a reminder of what can be achieved through collaboration.”
