“From bench to byte: building a connected cancer data ecosystem
I’m delighted to share our new paper in the European Journal of Cancer:
‘From bench to byte: a UK perspective on data‑driven cancer research’.
This work reflects a collective effort across the UK to move beyond generating data towards making cancer data findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable (FAIR) – and, crucially, towards ensuring that data‑driven research delivers real benefits for people affected by cancer.
The paper closely aligns with Cancer Research UK (CRUK)’s Research Data Strategy, which sets out a clear vision for strengthening trust, infrastructure, skills and collaboration across the cancer data landscape:
It also highlights the role of the Cancer Research UK (CRUK) Data Science Community and its Data Interest Groups, which bring researchers, clinicians, data scientists, funders and patients together to address shared challenges in a practical, community‑led way.
As part of this work, Frances Pearl and I lead the Data and Sample Reuse Data Interest Group. Our focus is on improving metadata, standards, governance and culture to unlock responsible reuse of high‑value cancer datasets – reducing duplication, accelerating discovery, and maximising the impact of funder and participant investment.
If you’re working with cancer data/samples, thinking about reuse, FAIR principles, federated analysis, or sustainable data infrastructures – or if you’d simply like to help shape how cancer data science is done better – we’d love you to get involved.
Let’s keep building an inclusive, trustworthy and collaborative cancer data ecosystem, together.”
