“Today in Belfast I was reminded why our work to beat cancer matters so much.
At the launch of Cancer Research UK’s new manifesto for Northern Ireland, I heard from people whose lives have been changed by cancer, including survivor and campaign ambassador Aisling.
Their stories were powerful, moving and a stark reminder that behind every statistic is a person, a family and a future that matters.
Cancer is the leading cause of death in Northern Ireland, and nearly one in two of us will be diagnosed with the disease during our lifetime. Yet too many people are still waiting too long for diagnosis and treatment, creating anxiety and uncertainty at an already difficult time.
The good news is that we know what works.
Decades of research have helped transform cancer survival, and we know that by investing in prevention, research, earlier diagnosis and faster access to treatment, we can save more lives.
That’s why we’re calling on the next Northern Ireland Executive to make cancer a priority and commit to reducing cancer deaths by 15% by 2040, helping to save around 5,900 lives.
This is about giving more people the chance to see their children grow up, spend more time with loved ones and live longer, better lives.
The opportunity is there. The evidence is there. The ambition is there.
Now we need the leadership and commitment to turn that ambition into action.”
