Michelle Mitchell, Chief Executive at Cancer Research UK (CRUK), shared a post on LinkedIn:
“When Race for Life began in 1994, 750 people came together and raised £48,000. As we approach the £1 billion milestone, it’s incredible to think how many people have been part of that journey.
But what stays with me about Race for Life is always the day itself.
You see people pinning the names of loved ones onto their tops – those they’ve lost, and those living with cancer. You see people running, walking, sometimes really pushing themselves, simply because they want to do something for others. There’s also something very open about it. People share their stories as they go round, and afterwards. Those conversations, often with complete strangers, can be incredibly moving.
For me, it has always felt like a celebration of life.
That comes through so well in this Times piece, including Marie and Celeste’s stories, and reflections from my colleague Claudia Nicholls-Magielsen on what makes Race for Life what it is.
Thank you to everyone who has played a part in this over the years – from volunteers to every person who has taken part. You are helping to make a real difference to people’s lives.”
