Michelle Mitchell: Targets Must Be Met, Not Just Set, to Ensure Faster, Fairer Cancer Diagnosis

Michelle Mitchell, Chief Executive of Cancer Research UK, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“A new Cancer Research UK (CRUK) report has shown that just half of people urgently referred for cancer testing are being diagnosed on time.

While more people are being told they do not have cancer within the target time frame, our new report reveals a concerning gap: between April and June 2024, only half (52.3%) of people who are eventually diagnosed with cancer received their diagnosis within 28 days, compared to 75.1% of people receiving the all-clear.

This is unacceptable. Waiting for a cancer diagnosis can make every single day feel like forever. While it’s promising that the NHS is now reporting separate FDS figures for those diagnosed and those who have cancer ruled out, and that it plans to raise the overall FDS target to 80% by March 2026, targets must be met, as well as set.

That’s why we are calling for the UK Government to act now and to implement a cancer guarantee to meet all waiting times by the end of this parliament and ensure faster, fairer diagnosis for everyone.
