Michelle Mitchell: Better Cancer Survival in Denmark: What’s Holding the UK Back?

Michelle Mitchell, Chief Executive of Cancer Research UK (CRUK), shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Despite having similar cancer survival to England two decades ago, Denmark has made huge progress and now has better outcomes across a number of cancer types than the UK.

The evidence is clear: countries with long term, well-funded cancer strategies do better at improving cancer outcomes.

I’ve spoken to both Hugh Pym from BBC News and Eleanor Hayward from The Times about what we can learn from Denmark and how the National Cancer Plan for England (NCP) must be a turning point for cancer.

The NCP must include a commitment to meet all cancer waiting times targets by the end of this parliament and diagnose more cancers at an earlier stage. To meet these ambitions, it must be backed by bold political leadership, sustained investment and a clear framework for accountability and delivery.

This is an opportunity to transform the lives of people affected by cancer – one the UK Government must take.”
