Michael Sapienza: A Lasting Legacy in the Fight Against Colorectal Cancer

Michael Sapienza, Chief Executive Officer of the Colorectal Cancer Alliance, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Today, RealClearHealth published an important and deeply moving essay, “Never Too Late to Make a Difference,” written by Alison Friedman shortly before her passing.

Alison was a passionate supporter of the Colorectal Cancer Alliance and a tireless advocate for stronger federal investment in colorectal cancer research, treatments, and cures. In this piece, she makes a clear and compelling case for why leadership, fairness, and urgency must guide how we fund cancer research.

Her message is especially timely. Colorectal cancer is now the leading cause of cancer death among Americans under 50, yet research funding has not kept pace with the growing burden of this disease. Alison understood that progress depends on aligning resources with reality and ensuring that patients are not left behind because of outdated funding priorities.

Although Alison is no longer with us, her voice and vision endure. At the Colorectal Cancer Alliance, we remain committed to advancing the work she championed, advocating for increased federal research funding, accelerating innovation, and pushing toward a future where colorectal cancer no longer takes lives too soon.

I encourage you to read Alison’s piece and reflect on the responsibility we all share to turn awareness into action.”
