Michael Sapienza: A Community That Understands the Realities of Cancer as Lived Experience

Michael Sapienza, Chief Executive Officer of the Colorectal Cancer Alliance, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Looking back on AllyCon this past weekend, I continue to feel the impact of what happens when patients, caregivers, and experts come together with honesty, urgency, and a shared sense of purpose. From December 12-14, the Colorectal Cancer Alliance hosted a community that understands the realities of this disease not as statistics, but as lived experience.

What stood out most was not only the depth of expertise in the room, but the openness with which it was shared. Clinicians and researchers educated about practical tips and challenged us to think differently about pathways to meaningful innovation. Patients spoke candidly about fear, resilience, and what support actually needs to look like. Caregivers were reminded that their journey needs support too. These are not easy conversations, but they are essential.

Leadership in this space means sharing knowledge, while acknowledging the gaps that persist and being willing to confront them. It requires listening to lived experience with the same attention we give scientific evidence. It requires collaboration. And most of all, it requires a commitment to keep patients at the center of everything we do.

The momentum we saw at AllyCon is real, and it will continue to fuel the work we do in the year ahead.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, contributed ideas, shared personal stories, or challenged us to stretch further than before. Your voices are shaping the future of care and survivorship, and they are shaping how we lead.”
