Michael Jefford, Director of the Australian Cancer Survivorship Centre, shared on LinkedIn:
“Proud to share our study, just published (open access) in The Lancet Regional Health – Western Pacific projecting cancer prevalence in Australia to 2050.
We estimate the number of Australians living with a previous cancer diagnosis will increase from 1.67 million in 2025 to 2.62 million by 2050. The greatest growth will occur among older Australians, with the number of survivors aged 80+ expected to more than double. Importantly, around 1.15 million people are projected to be living with cancer and requiring ongoing treatment or care in 2050. These findings highlight the need for stronger, more integrated cancer and survivorship services to meet future demand.”
