Michael Gieske, Physician Director Lung Cancer Screening at St. Elizabeth Healthcare, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“A remarkable couple days in Washington, D.C.
I was proud to represent St. Elizabeth Healthcare Lung Cancer Screening Program at a bipartisan congressional briefing in the Rayburn House Office Building, sponsored by LUNGevity Foundation where we discussed the importance of expanding access to lung cancer screening through the Increasing Access to Lung Cancer Screening Act.
It was a privilege to present alongside:
Dr. Mary Reid of Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, Donnita Butler, an inspiring lung cancer survivor, Dr. Sam Freyaldenhoven of Moffitt Cancer Center.
We were especially grateful to U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor (FL) for opening the briefing, welcoming us so warmly, and later graciously hosting our group in her office. An honor, as well, to have Mike Lawler (NY) share his perspectives.
Following the briefing, Congresswoman Castor was presented The White Ribbon Project.
Special thanks to Brandon Leonard of LUNGevity Foundation, whose outstanding advocacy and leadership were instrumental in organizing this event.
Following the briefing, our team had the opportunity to also meet with staff from Vern Buchanan and Debbie Wasserman Schultz.
Our experience continues to demonstrate that organized, high-quality lung cancer screening can save lives through earlier detection.
On a lighter note, I also had the opportunity to attend the opening day of The Great American State Fair on the National Mall, celebrating our nation’s 250th birthday. It was a wonderful reminder of what makes America special – people coming together, celebrating our history, and working toward a healthier future.
Together, we can ensure that more Americans have access to the screening that could save their lives.
Our comprehensive lung cancer screening program at St. Elizabeth Healthcare Physicians has now performed more than 60,000 low-dose CT screenings, diagnosed over 950 lung cancers, and shifted >75% of those cancers to an early, curable stage – demonstrating what is possible when teamwork excels!
Every person deserves the opportunity for early detection.
Policy matters. Advocacy matters. But what matters most are the lives saved when evidence-based screening reaches the people who need it.”
