Michael B. Wallace: Early Detection and Screening for Pancreatic Cancer

Michael B. Wallace, Professor of Medicine at Mayo Clinic, Founding Member of Artificial Intelligence Institute for Gastroenterology, Member Board of Directors at GIQUIC, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“This week we celebrate a beloved colleague, Dr. J. West Paul, who recently passed away from pancreatic cancer. To honor his legacy, the department of Internal Medicine at Mayo Clinic Florida, where he served, established the J. West Paul Memorial Lecture in Pancreatic Cancer. As a friend and colleague of West, and researcher in pancreatic cancer I was honored to give the inaugural lecture on Early Detection and Screening for Pancreatic Cancer. This session highlights how West and others inspire us to discover major recent advances at Mayo Clinic and elsewhere which now enable us to detect pancreatic cancer at earlier, potentially curable stages.

We emphasized that individuals with a strong family history of pancreatic cancer (2 or more 1st degree relatives, or any 3 relatives), or new onset diabetes after age 50, or a pancreatic cyst should consider screening with MRI and Endoscopic Ultrasound. Mayo has recently pioneered advances in  AI assisted CT for eardetection of solid tumors, and AI enhanced MRI (Cyst-X) for detection of early cancer in cystic neoplasms, as well as breakthrough advances in care for later stage cancers with KRAS inhibitors. Thanks to West’s family, Drs. Michael Phillips and Thomas Waller for all of their support and inspiration. ”
