“For years, transplant medicine treated a full HLA match like the only door that counted. If you didn’t find one, options narrowed-especially if your ancestry is underrepresented on the registry.
NMDP’s ACCESS trial (with CIBMTR) tested a different path: adults with common blood cancers received peripheral blood stem cell transplants from mismatched unrelated donors-as low as 4/8 HLA match-using post-transplant cyclophosphamide.
One-year overall survival stayed strong across mismatch levels (about 86% for deeper mismatches, 79% for 7/8). Presenting author Dr. Antonio Jimenez-Jimenez of Sylvester and the NMDP team are showing that ‘donor for all’ can be more than a slogan. I remember how heavy the search for a match felt. Research that widens who can reach a curative transplant isn’t niche. It’s equity with a survival curve attached.”
