Megan Sanders: One Year of Progress in Australia’s Lung Cancer Screening Program

Megan Sanders, Chief Executive Officer at Thoracic Oncology Group of Australasia, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“One year after the launch of Australia’s National Lung Cancer Screening Program (NLCSP), it’s encouraging to see a national initiative transition from policy into routine clinical practice.

At the TOGA 2026 Annual Scientific Meeting, Jacqui Real, Cancer Australia, presented a comprehensive update on the program’s first year, highlighting both the scale of implementation and the collaborative effort required to make screening work across Australia.

Some of the milestones shared included:

  •  More than 103,000 Australians enrolled in the program.
  •  More than 102,500 low dose CT scans completed.
  •  Approximately 285 people screened every day.
  •  Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander participants represent more than 5% of enrolments, an important achievement in ensuring equitable access.
  •  269 primary lung cancers diagnosed, allowing patients to enter treatment pathways earlier than may otherwise have occurred.

Special shout out to Heart of Australia who are bringing lung cancer screening to rural and very rural parts of Australia with buses especially equipped with CT.”
