Nigeria Advances Cancer Care with NCCP Launch – Medicaid Cancer Foundation

“In recognition of World Cancer Day, we at Medicaid Cancer Foundation attended a stakeholders’ meeting convened by the Nigerian Cancer Society, alongside partners from ICCARE, National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment NICRAT, and other key institutions working in cancer care.

The meeting marked the official launch of the National Cancer Control Program (NCCP), a significant step in Nigeria’s response to cancer. It was a moment to take stock of where we are and where we still fall short.

Conversations focused on the progress made over the years through advocacy, policy development, and expanded treatment efforts. These gains matter. But so do the gaps that remain uneven access to care, late diagnoses, financial barriers, and the realities faced daily by patients and families navigating cancer in Nigeria.

The emphasis throughout the meeting was clear: cancer care must be equitable. Policies must translate into services people can actually reach. Treatment must not depend on location or income. And national strategies must be implemented with the patient at the centre.

As advocates, our role is to keep these realities in focus locally and within the global cancer conversation. We remain committed to pushing for systems that work for patients, supporting evidence-based policies, and contributing to efforts that improve cancer care in Nigeria and beyond.”
