Mazvita Sengayi-Muchengeti: Great Experience at the Wits-Bristol Cancer Workshop at SBIMB

Mazvita Sengayi-Muchengeti, Head of Department at the National Health Laboratory Service, shared a post on LinkedIn by Sydney Brenner Institute for Molecular Bioscience (SBIMB), adding:

“It was a great learning experience joining the University of the Witwatersrand and the University of Bristol researchers to explore opportunities for collaboration on colorectal cancer.

Thank you, Tumi Ramasodi, for sharing your lived experience with the team, and Wenlong Carl Chen for speaking on the South African National Cancer Prevention Services (SANCaPs).”

Quoting SBIMB’s post:

“This week, we hosted the Wits-Bristol Cancer Workshop at the SBIMB to explore opportunities for collaboration in addressing the colorectal cancer burden in South Africa.

Colorectal cancer is a growing health challenge in South Africa, ranking as the fourth most commonly diagnosed cancer and the sixth leading cause of cancer-related deaths. Early-onset colorectal cancer (EOCRC), diagnosed before the age of 50, disproportionately affects individuals of Sub-Saharan descent. Despite this urgent burden, colorectal cancer remains understudied in non-European populations.

Clinicians, researchers, clinician-researchers, and individuals with lived experience gathered to explore the genetic drivers of colorectal cancer, the gut microbiome and its numerous research possibilities, early detection, screening, and prevention, as well as building resilient health systems to address the disease burden.

The two-day workshop, spearheaded by Philip Haycock and Brandenburg Jean-Tristan, brought together more than 30 participants, including researchers, clinicians, advocates, and policy stakeholders from institutions such as the University of Bristol, Wits University, the Wits Donald Gordon Medical Centre, Wits DIH, the National Cancer Registry, Cancer Alliance, and the Colorectal Alliance.

Tackling diseases such as colorectal cancer requires cross-disciplinary and multinational collaboration.”
