May Abdel-Wahab Reviews 2025 Achievements of IAEA Rays of Hope Network

May Abdel-Wahab, Director Division of Human Health at International Atomic Energy Agency, shared on LinkedIn:

IAEA Rays Of Hope continued to advance. Today, more than 100 countries are part of Rays of Hope, and 18 institutions are members of the Anchor Centre network, including seven designated in 2025.

To support these Centres critical work, we conducted expert missions to develop tailored workplans, equipped them with VR tools (also used in Global health Catalyst events in Ghana and Bangladesh), and facilitated regular engagement across the entire Anchor Centre network.

The Centres continued to host fellows, train specialists, support quality assurance, conduct research, and share expertise – enabling broader use of advanced techniques. In addition, in 2025, 12 teaching activities were delivered for and by Anchor Centres, more than 500 in-person participants and over 200 online professionals have participated in training organized under the Anchor Centres.

We also provided more than 90 units of diagnostic and treatment equipment to LMIC, including ten linear accelerators and 55 mammography machines, significantly strengthening national cancer care capacity in Africa and beyond. We also joined forces with three new:

  • Collaborating Centres: Prinses Máxima Centrum voor kinderoncologie.
  • Centro Uruguayo de Imagenología Molecular – CUDIM.
  • Fondazione Policlinico Universitario Agostino Gemelli IRCCS.

And with support from private sector partners such as Varian and Elekta, secured life-saving equipment including a LINAC and treatment planning stations. We started joint activities with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, including the first task force and consultancy meetings to develop training curricula aimed at scaling up global pediatric cancer care capacity.

As mentioned before, our conference on advances in radiation oncology was a success and the 2025 WHA resolution on strengthening medical imaging passed. At the heart of all these achievements is the exemplary commitment of the NAHU colleagues and our collaborators around the world.

Here’s to an even more impactful 2026 as we continue to leverage nuclear science and technology towards better health and nutrition for all!”
