Matt Sherer: The Future of Cancer Centers Is Defined by Connectivity

Matt Sherer, Director of Oncology Service Line at UMC Health Systen, shared on LinkedIn:

The cancer center of the future is not defined by square footage, it is defined by connectivity.

A beautiful facility can still deliver fragmented care. The real differentiators are:

  • One intake pathway
  • One navigation model
  • One multidisciplinary structure
  • One referral strategy
  • One access dashboard
  • One governance model
  • One regional growth plan

The strongest programs build around the patient journey – not the department map.
Having been involved in large-scale cancer center development across multiple organizations, I have found a consistent lesson: a building can create momentum, but it cannot replace strategy.
Bottom line: Don’t build a destination unless you’ve designed the system that gets patients there.”
