Matt Sherer: Scientific Funding Is About the Very Real Lives of Patients

Matt Sherer, Director of Oncology Service Line at UMC Health System, shared on LinkedIn:

“I just read a powerful article by a stage IV cancer patient, Kim Peters, who argues that proposed funding cuts to science are directly cutting off hope for people like her.

She shares her personal story of fighting cancer for a decade, only to have it return, and now faces uncertainty about the future of clinical trials due to defunded research.

This resonated deeply with me. It’s a crucial reminder that scientific funding isn’t just about abstract budgets; it’s about the very real lives of patients. When we cut funding for research, we are essentially limiting the potential for new treatments and cures.

As Peters writes, these cuts don’t just hurt institutions; they hurt people. They affect the researchers working tirelessly for breakthroughs and the patients who depend on those breakthroughs for a chance at a future. This also applies to the proposed Medicaid cuts.

These cuts could severely impact the ability of our most vulnerable patients to access the care they need, and leading to worse health outcomes.

We must prioritize investment in science and patient care. The lives of so many depend on it.”
