“If Higher MV = More Penetration
Why Is 6 MV Still Used Everywhere?
Because deeper is not always better.
Safer + More Precise = Better Treatment.
Why 6 MV is the Daily Workhorse?
- Treats most routine cancers
- Very predictable dose planning
- Best suited for IMRT / VMAT
- Minimal neutron risk
- Standard shielding → affordable setup
When We Use Higher MV (>10 MV)-
- Very deep tumors
- Large body separation
- Selected special cases
Trade-offs:
- Higher neutron contamination
- Higher bunker cost
- Sometimes unnecessary extra dose spread
So,
Right beam = Right patient
Not highest energy = Best treatment”
