Martin Eriksson: Cancer Planners Forum in Geneva on National Cancer Strategies

Martin Eriksson, Policy and Advocacy Expert at The Swedish Cancer Society, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Back in Sweden after rewarding days at the second edition of the Cancer Planners Forum in Geneva, arranged by Union for International Cancer Control (UICC).

During the forum, approximately 120 participants from 54 countries gathered to discuss how national cancer strategies can move from ambition to actual change. There is a lot to learn from each other.

National cancer strategies are important tools for bringing together different actors and creating a long-term perspective, clear priorities and direction in cancer work.

Sweden has recently updated its national cancer strategy, which makes these discussions extra relevant to us.

Collaborations between politics, healthcare, research, civil society and people with their own experience are crucial for cancer strategies to make a difference in practice.

Behind every national cancer strategy there are also people with great knowledge, commitment and a desire to create change, often under very different conditions. For me, it has been inspiring to say the least to meet so many people who are driving these issues forward around the world.

Despite global uncertainties and a Geneva weather that offered both sun and heavy rain showers, the commitment was at its peak, to say the least!”
