Martin Dietrich, Medical Oncologist at The US Oncology Network, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“With heavy heart, I wanted to share the news that my father, Dr. Manfred Dietrich, has passed peacefully this last weekend.
He was my inspiration to pursue my education in the natural sciences and to pursue an inspiring career at the interface of clinical medicine and genetics. As many of you know, he was an 11-year survivor of metastatic melanoma. He faced his diagnosis with extraordinary courage, resilience, and grace. Due to the advances in medicine, he was able to enjoy the gift of many wonderful years and through many beautiful milestones.
My heartfelt thanks belongs to the wonderful team at Bristol Myers Squibb and the team of Marty Whalen during the early days of immunotherapy that allowed him access to medications that turned dim hope into more than a decade of survival.
I am also deeply grateful for the many of you that followed his course of the many years, that supported me and my family and that were so kind in reaching out, checking in and extending a helping hand. It is truly heartwarming to see the outpouring of support for our family. There are too many friends to name but please know how sincerely you are appreciated.
A special thanks belongs to his medical team at American Oncology Network in Fort Myers FL that cared for him with deep compassion and dedication until the very end. Knowing his care in their wonderful expert hands was a great comfort and meant everything to him and our family.
Papa, your strength will continue to inspire me. You will forever be loved and deeply missed.
Rest in peace until we see each other again.”
