Martha Wanjiru: Bringing HPV DNA Self-Sampling Closer to Women

Martha Wanjiru, Nurse Educator and ToT in Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening and Treatment of Precancerous Lesions Screening, Cervical Advocate and Champion Kiambu County, Kenya, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Community outreach experience – Bringing HPV DNA Self-Sampling Closer to Women:

Community-based HPV DNA self-sampling is proving to be a practical and acceptable approach to cervical cancer screening when integrated with other health services.

Our approach starts with:

  • Health promotion and education, where women receive information on cervical cancer prevention.
  • Give clear instructions on the self-sampling procedure.
  • Working closely with Community Health Promoters (CHPs).
  • We distribute HPV DNA self-sampling kits and guide women through the process.
  • One by one, women return their samples for proper labeling and completion of request forms.

As they wait, we maximize the opportunity by providing clinical breast examinations, assessment of other health concerns, and proper documentation.

It is inspiring to see women confidently queuing with their HPV samples – a powerful reminder that when services are brought closer to communities, women respond.

Integrated community outreach is more than screening; it is about education, early detection, trust, and ensuring that no woman is left behind in the journey toward cervical cancer elimination.”
