Martha Wanjiru: Organizing a Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening in Wakimbizi Slums

Martha Wanjiru, Nurse Educator and ToT in Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening and Treatment of Precancerous Lesions Screening, Cervical Advocate and Champion Kiambu County, Kenya, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Yesterday we conducted a breast, cervical cancer screening, fistula screening, other NCDs outreach in Wakimbizi slums, Thika. Accessing the venue was not easy — accessing the sloppy area with tents and equipment was a challenge, but we remained committed to serving the community.

Despite the difficult terrain, women turned up for screening, health education, and referrals. One statement that touched me deeply was from a woman who said:

“I have never heard of breast and cervical cancer screening.”

That reminded us why awareness and outreach matter. Many women are still unreached, uninformed, and underserved. As healthcare workers, we must continue going beyond hospital walls to meet communities where they are.

It may be difficult, but every hill climbed, every tent raised, and every woman educated is a step toward saving lives through early detection.

Proud of the team for showing resilience, compassion, and dedication to women’s health. Together we continue advancing equitable access to cancer screening services in our communities.”
