Markus Müller: Opening of a New Science Building Carrying Dr. Eugene Braunwald’s Name

Markus Müller, President at Medical University of Vienna, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“It is with deep sadness that we learned today of the passing of Professor Eugene Braunwald (1929-2026), the father of modern cardiology and an icon of medicine. Born in Vienna and expelled from his home country in 1938, he was the longtime head of internal medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School, and a role model for my generation as a physician.

I am profoundly grateful to him for his mentorship and his invaluable personal advice.
The Medical University of Vienna will continue to visibly remember Eugene Braunwald: Our lecture hall in the new ‘Center for Translational Medicine’ will bear his name, the ‘Eugene Braunwald Auditorium.’ His legacy will thus remain present in the very place where he was born and where the young generation of Austrian doctors will be trained.”

Robert A. Harrington, Stephen and Suzanne Weiss Dean at Weill Cornell Medicine and Provost for Medical Affairs at Cornell University, shared this post, adding:

“I was honored to be invited to give the keynote lecture when the building opens in the fall 2026. Now it becomes an even more profound honor to provide remarks when the opening of a new science building carrying Dr Braunwald’s name will be celebrated in his native city.”
