Mark Lawler: European Leaders Gather in Brussels to Advance the Right to Be Forgotten

Mark Lawler, Chair in Translational Cancer Genomics at Queen’s University Belfast, shared on LinkedIn:

“In Brussels for tomorrow’s High Level event ‘Ending Financial Discrimination Against Cancer Survivors: The Right To Be Forgotten as a Human Right’. On 21 October 2026, leading voices from across Europe will gather in Brussels for a full-day High-Level Conference dedicated to ending financial discrimination against cancer survivors and advancing the Right to Be Forgotten for cancer survivors. Organised by my amazing colleague and friend Dr Françoise Meunier and co-organised with myself (a very great honour), the conference is an associated event of the Irish Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2026.

That this event is occurring within the Irish Presidency is critical. This is a seminal moment for the Irish Presidency, particularly given Ireland’s recent introduction of a law preventing financial discrimination against cancer survivors. Already cancer survivors in Ireland are benefitting – on the very first day (last week 15th October), cancer survivors were able to access financial services at over 85% less than they were previously charged, prior to the law being in place. A huge victory for Irish cancer survivors, but also a catalyst for change, with Ireland lighting a spark of hope that can reverberate right across Europe. Help us remove this discrimination against cancer patients from every country in Europe.
